Our programmes for junior scientists

The Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds (BIF) awards long-term PhD fellowships worldwide. At any given time, we support some 120 outstanding junior researchers working on their doctoral thesis (PhD). Every year, some 45 new fellowships are granted. Our Travel Grants programme is geared to PhD and medical students, as well as postdoctoral researchers, to enable their participation in short-term practical trainings and scientific courses (e.g. summer or winter schools). Every year, we award some 100 travel grants. Both programmes are geared towards research in basic biomedicine.

Also in both programmes, the Boehringer Ingelheim Fonds supports Europeans working in Europe and overseas, as well as researchers from overseas working in Europe. So far, we have funded junior scientists of more than 90 nationalities.

In our third programme for junior scientists, we grant MD fellowships to medical students studying in Germany to help them pursue an ambitious experimental research project in basic biomedical research in Europe or overseas.
